SYNOPSIS:
On 8/18/2020 I encountered and assisted the Alexandria Police department with an assault involving weapons between two male which yielded one male being arrested for assault charges and the other cited.
NARRATIVE:
On 8/18/2020 at about 1605 hours I, Special Agent (SA) Shawn Schmidt, was exiting the east side of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office located at 216 7th Ave w in the city of Alexandria, MN. I observed a white male with a red shirt, later identified as Eric Neil Cornett (DOB: 4/18/1996), yelling at another male who I recognized to be Judd Bradford Hoff (DOB: 11/16/1970). The yelling continued as I was dressing with protective equipment. While walking toward Hoff and Cornett, observed that Cornett was walking backwards, southbound, on the sidewalk of Fillmore St and was holding an American flag on a flag pole in his
left hand. What appeared to be 15-20 feet away, north of Cornett on the same sidewalk, I observed Hoff walking forward at the same pace as Cornett and in Cornett’s direction. Hoff was carrying a machete or large blade in his right arm with his arm extended all the way out pointing the blade away from his body and towards the ground and appeared to be chasing after Cornett, but at a walking pace.

Funny, that neither West Central MN Drug & Violent Crime Task Force Special Agent Shawn Schmidt nor Douglas County Deputy Kaylen Berle could fall back onto their expensive and time-consuming work-related continuing education to record the mentally unstable gunslinging stalker Eric Cornett's statement with their work-issued cellphone, isn't it? It is, isn't it? (Why oh why wasn't deputy Berle wearing her body camera while on duty? Hmm? Inquiring minds want to know, don't they?) You do remember that Alexandria Police Officer Nate Larson's incident report clearly states body camera video does exit for the mentally unstable gunslinging stalker Eric Cornett's statement, don't you? It's just that that damning body camera video is magically and mysteriously illegally withheld from poor Judd, isn't it? It is, isn't it? Can you say: "The fix is in"?
As I drew my firearm, I gave verbal commands to Hoff to drop the blade and get on the ground. Once Hoff moved and responded to my commands, I observed that Cornett was carrying a black handgun in his right hand and had been pointing it in the direction of Hoff. Hoff immediately complied by setting the blade down and placing his hands on the hood of his car which was parked on the side of Fillmore St where the fight was occurring. Cornett immediately placed his firearm on the sidewalk and placed his hands in the air. As additional officers arrived on scene, I gave additional commands to Cornett to set down the flagpole and move away from his firearm. Cornett was instructed down to his knees until placed into handcuffs by Officer Nate Larson. Cornett’s firearm was immediately secured and was given to Deputy Berle to be cleared. Upon speaking with Cornett, Cornett gave the following paraphrased statements.
- Was driving in Alexandria when he observed Judd Hoff driving around with an American Flag, flying it upside down.
- He was upset about how Hoff was flying the flag and started to follow Hoff when Hoff slammed on his brakes in front of his vehicle.
- Cornett drove around Hoff and slammed his brakes in front of Hoff’s vehicle.
- Cornett exited his vehicle and grabbed the American flag and pole taking it from Hoff before walking away.
- Hoff started yelling back and got out of his vehicle holding a machete and started walking towards him.
- Cornett had his permit to carry and was carrying his Glock pistol.
- Took out and presented his pistol in reaction to Hoff’s machete.
- Was walking away from Hoff and Hoff kept following until law enforcement arrived.
Hoff was taken into custody for Assault charges and Cornett was issued a citation for disorderly conduct.
